Lisboa Downtown 2007

Steve Peat wins for the 6th consecutive time

The Englishman from Santa Cruz Syndicate Team is the King of Lisboa Downtown 2007! Steve Peat conquered the most wanted red throne for the 6th time. The Brit rider defended his title fiercely and beat his last years’ time.

The city of Lisbon welcomed for the 8th time the world’s best urban downhill athletes. It also had an important presence: Rubens Barrichello, the Honda Racing F1 Team pilot, came to Alfama to support the Honda bikers. The crowd gathered early on the Largo do Terreiro do Trigo. The downhill fans did not want to miss the race that filled Alfama streets from the Castle of São Jorge to Largo do Terreiro do Trigo.

The race started at 14:00 with the Semi-Finals. As always, the women were the first to appear on the Lisboa Downtown with 12 athletes, two of them being the Portuguese riders Aurea Agostinho and Margarida Algarve. The women’s best time was 1:56 made by Helen Gaskell, always in control. Next were the 35 men bikers. All eyes were on Steve Peat who showed his talent once more and came down with a time of 1:42.

After a one hour break where the Formula 1 pilot Rubens Barrichello gave an interview, all the attention was focused on the Finals. Thousands filled rapidly the best spots on the course to watch the most audacious jumps. There was much curiosity in knowing if Peat would retain his Lisboa Downtown crown and the crowd watched eagerly the last jumps. To everyone surprise, or not, Steve Peat was the winner for the 6th time in a row with a time of 1:39. The best Portuguese rider was Cláudio Loureiro with a time of 1:43. The totality of the prize money was 20.000 Euros. Steve Peat won a Kia Picanto car, offered by José Saval from Kia Portugal.

In the women’s race the winner was Sabrina Jonnier, who crossed the line in 1:54. Riding aggressively, the French biker left the audience in ecstasy. The best Portuguese rider was Aurea Agostinho with a time of 2:13, who courageously managed to fly over all the courses’ jumps.

Lisboa Downtown was once more a success and confirmed Alfama has the official neighbourhood of urban downhill. Year after year this event gains more and more fans and the show is getting even better. Speed, action and adrenalin will return to Alfama in 2008!
